Abstract

Brúarásskóli is a small school in Fljótsdalshérað that has gained recognition for its fruitful and creative educational environment, earning the title of "Innovation School of the Year" in the small schools category in both 2012 and 2013. Outdoor education is a staple of the curriculum; the school features two dedicated outdoor classrooms, and one week of every month is designated as an "Outdoor Education Week." The faculty has been deeply involved in development projects, resulting in a complete transformation of the school’s assessment system in recent years. Many delightful traditions define the school's atmosphere, such as dance being taught at all grade levels and the annual production of an original musical. In these performances, every student has a role, plays an instrument, and even helps compose some of the music. Additionally, a music school operates within the building, where approximately 90% of students attend lessons during school hours. The school also maintains an animal house where students care for chickens, rabbits, and guinea pigs; food scraps from the canteen are composted through the animals, and eggs from the chickens are used in home economics classes. As a "Green Flag" school, Brúarásskóli selects a new theme related to nature and environmental protection every two years. Finally, every two weeks, students take home an "Ace of Hearts" card featuring personalized, positive messages written by their homeroom teachers.
